Your Fractional CMO Questions, Answered Honestly
-
A Fractional CMO steps in as your head of marketing — part-time, but with full ownership of the direction. I set the strategy, manage your team and vendors, and drive toward a clear growth goal. You get senior marketing leadership without the full-time cost or commitment.
The difference from a consultant or agency: I'm in your business, not just advising from the outside.
-
A consultant typically comes in, gives recommendations, and leaves. A Fractional CMO stays in the business, owns the outcomes, and leads the execution — not just the strategy. Think less 'outside advice' and more 'embedded leader who's accountable for results.'
-
Agencies execute. They run ads, produce content, manage campaigns. That's valuable — but only when someone is steering the ship.
A Fractional CMO provides the strategy and leadership that makes execution effective. I set direction, decide where to invest, manage your agency relationships, and hold everyone accountable to the same growth goal.
In many cases, I work alongside your existing agency — not instead of them.
-
I work with founder-led and growing businesses — typically between $1M and $15M in revenue — where marketing is happening but no one is leading it.
Most of my clients are consumer brands, high-growth startups, and companies expanding into new markets. What they have in common: smart teams, real traction, and a founder who knows marketing needs to get more serious.
If that sounds like you, we're probably a fit.
-
I keep my client roster intentionally small — typically 3 to 5 active engagements at any time. That's by design. The Fractional CMO model only works if I'm genuinely embedded in your business, not spreading attention thin across a dozen accounts.
-
The right time is usually when one or more of these feels true:
→ Your pipeline is unpredictable and you're not sure why
→ You're spread across too many channels with nothing to show for it
→ Your agency or team is executing, but nobody's setting the direction
→ You know marketing matters — you just don't have time to lead it yourself
If any of these hit close to home, that's the signal. Most founders wait too long — and spend more money on execution than they ever would have spent on leadership.
-
There are two ways to work together — and you choose the level of involvement.
Fractional CMO (Strategy & Leadership):
I embed in your business as your head of marketing. I set the strategy, manage your team and agencies, and drive toward a clear growth goal — typically 1–2 days per week.
Strategic Sparring Partner & Marketing Advisor:
You're running marketing yourself but want a senior strategist in your corner. I push back on your thinking, pressure-test your plans, and help you make sharper decisions — without handing anything over.
We start with a free strategy call to understand your situation, then figure out together which model makes the most sense.
-
The Fractional CMO engagement is for founders who want to hand off marketing leadership entirely — I own the direction, manage the team, and drive the strategy.
The Strategic Sparring Partner is for founders who want to stay in the driver's seat but want a senior strategist to pressure-test their thinking. Same expertise, less involvement.
Not sure which fits? That's what the free strategy call is for.
-
That's what the Strategic Sparring Partner model is built for — focused engagements around a specific challenge like brand positioning, a go-to-market launch, or a marketing audit. If a one-off project is the right fit, we can structure it that way. We'll figure out the right format on the free strategy call.
-
Yes — that's a core part of the Fractional CMO role. I set the direction and hold your team and agencies accountable to it. That means regular check-ins, performance reviews, and making sure execution actually maps back to the strategy.
You don't have to fire your agency to work with me. In many cases, having a Fractional CMO in place makes your agency more effective — because now there's someone on your side who can brief them properly and evaluate their work.
-
Most clients notice a shift in the first few weeks — not because I work fast, but because clarity moves faster than activity.
In the early weeks, I'm diagnosing what's working, what's not, and where the biggest opportunities are. Quick wins get addressed immediately. The bigger growth engine takes 90–120 days to start showing consistent results.
I won't promise a number I can't stand behind. What I will tell you: you'll have a clear plan and a focused team faster than you'd expect.
-
Engagements typically range from $6K–$20K per month, depending on scope and level of involvement.
For context: a full-time CMO costs $200K–$350K per year before benefits and equity. For most founder-led businesses at the $1M–$15M stage, that's premature — and often the wrong hire at the wrong time.
With a Fractional CMO, you get the same level of strategic leadership at a fraction of the cost, with no long-term commitment risk. Most clients find it pays for itself quickly once the right priorities are in place.
-
No. Engagements are typically structured in 3-month blocks, with a mutual option to continue. There's no lock-in or exit penalty. I'd rather earn the relationship every quarter than hold you to a contract.
-
Start with a free strategy call. It's a real conversation — not a sales pitch.
We'll talk through where your marketing is today, where you want it to go, and whether working together makes sense. You'll leave with more clarity than you came in with, regardless of what you decide.
If it's a fit, we move quickly. If it's not, I'll tell you that too.
-
Both. Most of my work is remote — strategy sessions, team check-ins, and advisory calls can all happen over video.
For clients in Los Angeles, I'm available for in-person work when it makes sense. For clients outside LA, remote works seamlessly.
-
A few things: I've led marketing across consumer brands, high-growth startups, and international companies — across the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. I don't use templated playbooks.
I also don't sub out work to a junior team. When you work with Great Super, you work directly with me. That's the whole point.
